FOCUS Charity Leicester

FOCUS is a Leicester charity, inspiring young people, aged 13- 25, to make positive changes in their lives and in their communities for over 30 years!

Last week, we celebrated World Art Day with a creative twist.
Our Inspire group created paper portraits, using carefully cut shapes and layered colours to build bold pieces.

From experimenting with colours, shapes and layering techniques, each creation reflected the unique perspective and style of each young person.
It was fantastic to see ideas develop into detailed portraits. A great reminder that art isn’t limited to one medium. Sometimes stepping outside the usual approach can open up a whole new way of thinking and creating.

For our final Easter holiday session, our young people headed to our Wooden Spoon Allotment.

The group got stuck into a range of tasks, including planting seeds for the season ahead.
They also began work on our sensory walk, adding different materials to create a space that encourages us to connect with the senses.

It was fantastic to see everyone working together, enjoying the outdoors, and contributing to a shared space. A brilliant end to the Easter break.

If you’ve been following our Inspire project recently, you’ll know that they’ve been working with LAMP to explore peer advocacy — what it means and how young people can support one another.

Yesterday, it was time to put that learning into practice. Young people stepped into the role of leaders, sharing how they'd teach peer advocacy to others and bringing their own ideas, creativity, and experiences into the session.

The ideas developed will now be used to re-write and adapt the peer advocacy workshops, ensuring they feel relevant, engaging, and accessible for other young people. This will help us reach even more people and continue to grow the impact of the project.

A fantastic example of young people not just learning — but leading the way.

For the Easter holidays, two of our Facing the Future volunteers led a hands-on cooking session.

The group got to make a variety of sweet treats, including smoothies and chocolate nests.
They even held a pancakes-making competition, decorating their pancakes to look like bunnies!
It was fantastic to see everyone working together, and supporting each other in the kitchen.
A big well done to our volunteers for planning and delivering such an engaging session.

As part of Easter half-term, our young people are enjoying a variety of fun games and sessions. One of these was a karaoke session, where young people, volunteers and even staff took the courage to get up and sing their hearts out!

Everyone was super supportive of each other, and we had some brilliant talent amongst the group.

At the end, each young person and volunteer was given an Easter egg courtesy of the Rotary Club of Leicester. Thanks again to them; the group was overjoyed.

Last week, our Inspire group had their final session on peer advocacy with @lampcharity, focusing on dealing with change.
The young people explored how change can affect us, as well as practical ways to manage it and support others through it. It was a thoughtful and engaging discussion, building on everything they’ve learned throughout their time with LAMP.

Stay tuned for our continued working LAMP, which will see our young people re-write and adapt the sessions in a way that feels accessible for their own age group — a fantastic opportunity to put their learning into practice.

A big thank you to LAMP for delivering such a valuable and impactful series of sessions.

Last week, our Facing the Future group took part in a session to celebrate Neurodiversity Celebration Week, recognising and valuing the different ways people think, learn, and experience the world.
The session created space for open conversations around neurodiversity, helping young people to build understanding, challenge stereotypes, and highlight the strengths that come from thinking differently.

It was a positive and empowering session that reinforced the importance of inclusion, acceptance, and celebrating what makes us all unique.

Thanks again to @lampcharity for another brilliant session on Peer Advocacy.
Last week, they and our Inspire group discussed the question: ‘Why don’t we always speak up when incidents of discrimination happen?’

The young people explored the factors that can make someone hesitant to speak up, through both a card-matching activity and by acting out different scenarios in which speaking out may feel daunting.

They then created their own toolkit for safely intervening during an incident, using the approach of ‘Direct, Distract, Delegate, Delay, and Document’.

We love partnering with others to grant young people new skills and experiences. Why not collaborate with us - contact: https://www.focus-charity.co.uk/contact-us/

Last week, one of our Facing the Future volunteers led a session to raise awareness for Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month.

The group explored what autoimmune diseases are, how they can affect people’s daily lives, and the importance of understanding and empathy for those living with long-term health conditions.

A big well done to our volunteer for delivering such an informative and meaningful session.

We once again collaborated with LAMP last week, for another insightful session on wellbeing.
This time, the group explored how best to manage stress and set boundaries when supporting other people.
Through discussion and activities, young people learned practical ways to protect their wellbeing.
It was a really valuable session, helping to build confidence, self-awareness, and understanding of how to look after ourselves and support others.

A big thank you to LAMP for continuing to deliver such meaningful sessions.

A very Happy Easter from the @rotaryclubleicester.

We were delighted to have a visit from Nick Thomson from the Rotary Club of Leicester this week, when he popped in to deliver 60 Easter eggs.
These will be distributed to the young people involved with our projects (so long as our CEO Matt Lilley can show some restraint!)

Thank you, Rotarians!

Last week, our Facing the Future volunteers hosted a session to mark National Careers Week.

The session kicked off with a fun round of Jobs Charades, getting everyone thinking about different careers in a creative way. Young people then spent time researching different jobs and learning more about the skills and pathways needed to pursue them.
This was followed by a mini job fair, where the group could share ideas and discuss different career interests.

Volunteers also provided CV support during the session, offering guidance and tips to help young people start preparing for the world of work.

A big thanks to our FtF volunteers for delivering such a supportive and informative session.

Last week, our Inspire group collaborated with @lampcharity for a session all about how young people can support one another.

The group explored Peer Advocacy and how to be an ally. To bring these ideas to life, young people created their own posters and mood boards, filled with what makes them who they are.
This encouraged reflection, self-expression, and understanding of how we can stand up for ourselves and others.

A big thank you to LAMP for delivering such an engaging and meaningful session!

This fantastic board of ideas is the voices of our young people, shaping the growth and direction of our projects.

Last week, our Facing the Future volunteers invited the group to share their ideas about what they would like to see delivered in future sessions.

By involving the young people in their decision-making, our volunteers can ensure the programme continues to reflect their needs, interests, and experiences.

The group also took time to review their successful second year, highlighting their achievements, and the impact the programme is having for young people in our community.

On 25th February, one of our young people took the lead and delivered a brilliant session for LGBT+ History Month, themed around Science & Innovation.

After a team pride-flag scavenger hunt around the HQ, the group explored historical LGBTQIA+ figures connected to science and innovation, researching their contributions and learning about the impact they’ve had on the world.

We’re incredibly proud of the confidence, preparation, and leadership shown by the young person who planned and ran the session — a fantastic example of youth voice in action.

We’ve come to the end of Year 2 for our Facing the Future project! Once again, the work of our mental-health first-aid volunteers has far exceeded our expectations and targets.

The year was not without its challenges, causing the project to shift to running volunteer-led sessions for our young people. However, this change gave the volunteers greater autonomy over the project, whilst also receiving direct input from participants.

A key example of this was the creation of our Study Support sessions. These formed as a result of open discussions with young people about how exam stress affected their mental health.

This year has been one of significant growth, resilience, and impact, and we look forward to building on this momentum in Year 3!

This month is ‘Boost Your Self-Esteem Month’, so last week, our Inspire project group had a session all about self-esteem.

The group held a discussion on what self-esteem is and the things that can boost or lower it.
Then they had a go at boosting their own self-esteem by creating a “Strength Shield”, highlighting their strengths, achievements, and the things about themselves that they’re proud of.
It was a great chance for the young people to big themselves up and recognise their capabilities.

Today is Shrove Tuesday, so our Inspire crew celebrated in true fashion by making their own pancakes.

As part of our half-term sessions, the young people - with the assistance of our volunteers - mixed and fried tons of pancakes.

For many, it was a learning experience on pouring the right amount of pancake-mix and flipping them over at the right time. But the pancakes turned out great in the end; it was all worth it for a morning of tasty treats!

Last week, for their final workshop with Tobias Gould, our Facing the Future group learned how to build business relationships.

Young people discussed the do’s and don'ts of first-introductions, and used that to explore tailored first-contact. They got to see how we build and maintain connections with our donors, partners and supporters.

Thanks so much to Tobias Gould for running these storytelling workshops. Our FtF group has learned so much about the fundraising and business side of what we do - all skills they can use in future projects.

Last week, our Facing the Future group put their learning with Tobias Gould into action - by creating proposals for new project ideas.

Last week, our Facing the Future group continued their storytelling project by exploring an important question: ‘who are our donors, and how can we connect with them?’

Young people discussed who they think holds influence and funding in the wider world, considering who might be able to support community projects and why.

Using these ideas, Tobias demonstrated his formula for identifying and reaching out to potential supporters, giving a live example of how platforms like LinkedIn can be used to build meaningful connections.

It was an eye-opening session that helped demystify fundraising and showed young people practical, real-world skills they can use in future projects.

Last Friday, we returned to the Wooden Spoon Allotment, cleaning up the space and getting everything ready for the new year.

Together we tidied the area, cleared beds, and took time to slow down and enjoy being outdoors. Refreshing the allotment was a simple but grounding activity that supported both our team’s wellbeing and teamwork.

Our Facing the Future group continued their storytelling project last week, learning what makes a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Young people explored different crowdfunding examples and worked together to decide which campaign was the most effective.

A thoughtful and engaging session with lots of great discussion on what makes a strong crowdfunder. We can’t wait to see how these ideas can be used in their own fundraiser video for FOCUS.

The Facing the Future group has started 2026 with an exciting new storytelling project in collaboration with Tobias Gould.

The aim of the project is to create a powerful fundraiser video that helps share real stories and supports FOCUS in achieving its goals.
Through this process, young people will explore storytelling, creativity, and how sharing lived experiences can make a real difference.
We’re excited to see this project develop and can’t wait to share the final outcome!

Last week marked our first Inspire session of 2026!
The group kicked off the new year by reflecting on the goals they set last year and building some new ones.

The group took time to look at what they achieved, what they learned along the way, and what they wished to work towards in the year ahead. It was a thoughtful and positive session, full of motivation, reflection, and fresh ideas.

We’re excited to see what the year has in store and to support everyone as they work towards their goals!

Last week, our volunteers and young people held a powerful and reflective session on both Anti-Bullying Week and World Kindness Day.

We began with an open conversation about bullying, the impact it can leave behind, and the ways we can support each other.

For World Kindness Day, each person was tasked with making a personalised gift for another in the group. From thoughtful messages to handmade crafts, the room was full of kindness and creativity.

Sessions like this remind us how important it is to build safe spaces where young people feel heard, supported, and valued.
